Character of the Month: Joseph, the Husband of Mary

Character of the Month: Joseph, the Husband of Mary

Welcome to December! - the month in which we celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. In honor of this season, I want us to take a closer look at the man who faithfully stood by Mary and helped her fulfill purpose and destiny.

This man is Joseph. Joseph has often been overlooked in Bible stories. When we hear the name Joseph, usually our minds go to the son of Jacob who had a coat of many colors. But for this month’s character study, we are focusing on Joseph, the husband of Mary (the mother of Jesus). That is how the Bible describes him in Matthew 1:16. Joseph’s story has ministered to me personally and I believe this is the perfect time to explore his character more deeply.

As part of our study this month,  I’ve provided some leading questions. Please reflect on these questions as you read and meditate on the Bible verses. Write down your thoughts and any insights the Holy Spirit places on your heart. My prayer for you is that you spend intentional time studying the Word to get a personal understanding of it. This practice allows God’s Word to take root in your heart far more deeply than relying on quick Internet searches. If possible, I’d also encourage you to compare versions and translations as this can enrich your understanding and help you internalize what you read.

God bless you as you take some time to draw closer to Him through His Word.

Scripture Focus:

Matthew 1:18-25

Matthew 2

Luke 2:1-7

Read & Reflect

  1. What stands out to you most about Joseph’s response to Mary’s pregnancy and the angel’s message?

  2. How does Joseph demonstrate obedience even when the situation is confusing or uncomfortable?

  3. In what ways do you see Joseph’s humility and quiet leadership?

  4. What is one area of your life where you feel God nudging you to trust Him more deeply, just as Joseph trusted?
